The arrests come just a week after an Algerian Frenchman Mohammad Merah killed 7 people in Toulouse. Police have been hunting Merah’s accomplices, but no direct links with him have been confirmed. President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed a crackdown on radical islamism after the Toulouse massacre – as Merah said he was inspired by Al-Qaeda. Sarkozy is running for the second term for France’s top job next month. Merah’s case has become a key tool to score political points not only for him, but for other candidates in the presidential race. Tesa Arcilla reports.
