Flying tire kills 80-year-old man in Milwaukee
The 80-year-old West Allis man hit in the face by a tire on Thursday has died of his injuries, Milwaukee police said. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man Wednesday as Thomas Poinkalla, of West Allis.The incident happened on 84th Street under the Interstate 94 overpass in Milwaukee. Released video from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation shows the wheel came off a northbound van, rolled across southbound lanes, launched off the curb and then hit the pedestrian in the chest and face. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital where he was being treated for life-threatening injuries.That same video shows the van’s driver immediately rushed to the aid of the pedestrian. Other cars stopped to help, too. The Milwaukee Police Department told WISN 12 News it is investigating this as an accident. No one has been arrested.
