Hampton Beach, New Hampshire carjacking: Man in custody


A man from Maine is in custody after police said he stole a car with a woman and an infant inside.Hampton police said David Tayes, 46, of Maine, stole the vehicle around noon at Hampton Beach State Park. Police said a woman and baby he did not know were inside the vehicle.Police said Tayes sped over the bridge into Seabrook at speeds high enough to endanger the lives of others, including the passengers in the vehicle.When the vehicle reached a red light on Ocean Boulevard at Route 286, police said the woman was able to put the car in park and told Tayes she was calling 911.Tayes got out of the vehicle, but police were able to find him and take him into custody a short time later, officials said.Tayes is facing four felony charges, including two counts of kidnapping.Bill Page said he saw Tayes before the incident occurred and that something was “off about him.””There’s a bench at the end of the road there. He asked me for a cigarette. I said no. Then, he asked me if I wanted to meet Lynard Skynard,” Page said. “Then, I kind of just walked away at that point. He said, ‘if you see them tell them I’m sorry.’ Then I walked away.”He will be arraigned at Rockingham Superior Court at 11 a.m. Monday.
