House Of The Dragon premiere lights up social media as fans share reaction to prequel series opener


House Of The Dragon premiered on Sunday on HBO and the prequel fantasy series drew a strong reaction on social media from tearful fans who were excited to finally see the anticipated spin-off series air.

Twitter lit up after the premiere episode titled ‘The Heirs of the Dragon’ introduced the setting and main characters of the show set 200 years before the events of the highly popular series Game Of Thrones.

The premiere episode set up a succession drama as King Viserys I Targaryen named his eldest daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen as heir to the Iron Throne over his troublesome brother Prince Daemon Targaryen.

One Twitter user noted that within the first 25 minutes of the first episode in the ten-part series, viewers saw a ‘crazy power hungry relative’, a death, a ‘wagon of body parts cut off’ and a sex scene. 

Fans were left in tears as the prequel which is airing four years after Game Of Thrones concluded in May 2019 following eight seasons on HBO.

One avid fan tweeted: ‘i’m genuinely in tears house of the dragon was so good it not only reminded me how much i love daenerys and game of thrones lore but how much we’ve been in need of real REAL television again.’ 

Others were delighted to hear the iconic Game Of Thrones theme tune play over the closing credits of the show, with one tweeting that ‘hearing the Game of Thrones theme playing had me screaming #HouseOfTheDragon.’ 

The opening episode followed the Targaryens as Daemon was banished by King Viserys when he learned that his younger brother mocked the death of his son Baelon, who died only hours after his birth that also claimed the life of Queen Aemma.

King Viserys became outraged after learning that Daemon during a celebratory speech after becoming the heir apparent referred to Baelon as ‘The Heir for a Day.’

Game of Thrones fans have been avidly waiting for the release of the upcoming prequel show, The House of Dragon.
