Lancashire news: Boy ‘nearly beats man to death on Blackpool Promenade then steals his bag’

A 16-year-old boy has been remanded in custody after being charged with robbery following ‘shocking’ footage emerging of a man being beaten.

A 16-year-old girl, who is believed to have filmed the incident, has also been arrested.

The video of the attack shows a man in his 40s sitting on Blackpool Promenade ‘completely defenceless’ and ‘minding his own business’ on Wednesday morning.

Another male approaches him and asks him for a ‘spare cig’ then starts shouting at him near the seaside town’s Lifeboat Station.

The man is said to have given him the cigarette he was smoking but the youth then demanded he hand over ‘everything’ and beat him senseless when he did not give in to his threats.

The attacker then starts repeatedly kicking and punching the victim before picking up and taking his bag.

Lancashire police said the victim has been left with several broken bones and serious cuts and bruises but ‘thankfully’ no life-threatening injuries.

One senior officer said it was ‘extremely fortunate’ that the attack did not end up in a ‘murder enquiry’.

Det Supt Becky Smith said the ‘level of violence displayed by the suspect [in the video] is quite frankly extremely disturbing and inexcusable’.

Detectives said a 16-year-old boy appeared at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court today and will next appear at Blackpool Youth Court on September 15 to face charges of robbery over the incident.

Officers also arrested a 16-year-old girl on suspicion of conspiracy to rob this evening. She remains in custody.

The disturbing video shows a boy – wearing a cap, dark top and grey shorts – approach the man as he sits alone on a step smoking.

The boy shouts: ‘I just wanted to ask ya, do you have a spare cig? That’s all I’m f****** asking, lad. I want a cig, that’s it.’

The man tells him to ‘chill’ and offers the youth his cigarette.

He takes it and says: ‘Yeah, I will f****** have that. You know why? Because I f****** want it. Now run me all your s*** right now. Every f****** thing, lad. You think I’m f****** joking, lad?’

The man tries to calm him down, but this only further enrages the boy, who asks: ‘Why should I f****** chill out?’

The victim pleads ‘that was my last cigarette’ but the youth responds by giving him a brutal kick to the head, knocking him to the ground.

He stands over him, punching him repeatedly in the face, shouting: ‘Did I f****** ask what your last cigarette was? Did I f****** ask? F****** pass me your f****** bag now.’

In a statement released, to Lancs Live, a force spokesperson said: ‘We posted earlier today about the shocking video of the man being assaulted and robbed on The Prom and we told you that a 16-year-old boy had been arrested and charged with robbery.

‘Just to update you he has now appeared at magistrates’ court and has been remanded into custody. He is next due to appear at Blackpool Youth Court on September 15th.

‘We also wanted to let you know that we have this afternoon arrested a 16-year-old girl on suspicion of conspiracy to rob. We believe she was the individual who filmed the incident. She is currently in custody.

‘Some people have been asking why the boy has been charged with robbery. Robbery is a serious offence which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

‘The offence is committed when someone steals from another while threatening or using force against the victim.

‘When we have reviewed all the evidence, we will of course consider any other appropriate charges.

‘Once again, we would like to stress that such levels of violence will not be tolerated in our communities and we will relentlessly pursue those who commit such heinous crimes.’

Det Supt Smith added: ‘The level of violence displayed by this suspect against a completely defenceless man who is sat down minding his own business is quite frankly extremely disturbing and inexcusable.

‘The fact that an accomplice sees fit to stand nearby watching and actually filming this despicable incident, making no attempt to stop it or offer any assistance to the male who is clearly seriously injured, makes this crime even worse.’

‘The fact that an accomplice sees fit to stand nearby watching and actually filming this despicable incident, making no attempt to stop it or offer any assistance to the male who is clearly seriously injured, makes this crime even worse.

‘In almost 29 years of policing in Blackpool I have witnessed some significantly traumatic and distressing incidents and we are extremely fortunate that I am not standing here today leading a murder enquiry and providing support to a bereaved family.

‘The fact that this isn’t the case has no bearing on the actions of the suspect who left the victim seriously injured with no regard to the condition he had been left in. Anyone who thinks this level of violence is acceptable is wrong and we simply will not tolerate it in our communities.

‘We join the police to ensure that those responsible for the most serious offences against our communities are identified and brought to justice and I will ensure that is the case.

‘I would like to thank those who have contacted us with information and would urge anyone who has further information or witnessed this incident to come forward.’

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 quoting log 0200 of August 31, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
