Teen dead after struck by train in St. Louis County


Police identified the victim Monday as 17-year-old Caleb Balaban from St. Clair, Missouri.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County police are investigating after a teenage boy was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Sunday night.

It happened in the 1400 block of Kiefer Creek Road in Castlewood State Park.

At about 4 p.m., officers from the West County Precinct responded to a call for help about a railroad accident with a person struck. They found the boy lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, St. Louis County police identified the victim as 17-year-old Caleb Balaban from St. Clair, Missouri. 

The Amtrak train was traveling from Chicago to Kansas City, Missouri when the victim, who was trespassing, came into contact with the train, according to an Amtrak spokesperson. 

The train was occupied by 123 passengers and crew at the time and no injuries were reported, according to the statement.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.

Amtrak is working with local law enforcement in their investigation.

Police said more information will be provided when it becomes available.
